stardom. good evening i'm terry moran, tonight americans under siege after heavily armed militants stormed the u.s. consulate in libya leaving the american ambassador and three others dead in the town of bengha benghazi. as president obama condemns this outrageous attack anti-american protesters spreading across the middle east in response to an anti-muslim film one backed by an infamous koran burning preacher. the flag is half staff for an american hero. >> my name is chris stevens and i'm the new u.s. ambassador to

libya. >> reporter: he was 52 years old. a former peace corps volunteer, a gentle man and idealist. >> i've spent almost my entire career in the middle east and north africa. >> reporter: secretary of state hillary clinton remembered him today. >> he risked his life to stop a tyrant and gave his life trying to help build a better libya. the world needs more chris stevenses. the attack came at night. 10:00 p.m. city of benghazi. militants stormed the u.s. consulate and overwhelmed security guards. inside, chris stevens and several other americans trapped, pinned down by intense smoke and gunfire. the attack rages on for five

hours. chris stevens dies from asphyxiation along with sean smith. two other americans are kill elsewhere. >> there is no justification for this. none. >> reporter: city cross the middle east are tense. some exploding in violent pro testifies like cairo where a mop breached the grounds of the u.s. embassy last night. some protesters are still there, one telling abc's lama hasan that he wants blood. why? what inflamed the mad passionate mobs and protesters in the streets? a movie. an incredibly amateurish crude and nasty movie made in the united states and released on youtube. innocence of muslims it's called. predicts prophet muhammad as a pedophile and womanizer.

among that is this guy. pastor terry jones. remember him? for a few tense days two years ago jones banked in a dangerous international controversy he ignited by declaring he would burn a koran. christians would ask what would jesus do. do you think jesus christ would say pastor go burn that holy book? >> absolutely. >> jesus christ would say that? >> absolutely? >> reporter: back then he was disuaded from doing, and he did it anyway and ten people were killed by a rioting mob in afghanistan. >> no matter what that church does if you retaliate we retaliate. i think we should send a message to them. we heed to send a message to radical islam. >> reporter: now jones is

promoting this movie as a way to unsalt muslims. he didn't make it. but who did? several actors were dubed that the script they shot contained no hunt of anti-muslim bigotry. the main character was george. and the lines were dubbed after the shoot. >> we were supposed to be playing a film of how a life was 2,000 years ago compared to today. not just what the film is supposed to be about. >> reporter: the damage is done. >> the world must stand together to unequivocally reject these brutal acts. >> reporter: president obama condemned the killing of the ambassador and other americans much it's not clear whether the film triggered the violence. no matter it's a political year and tragedy quickly became partisan. >> apologizinging for the right

of free speech is not the right direction for the administration. >> reporter: mitt romney came out defending the comment he made last night even while the attack was unfolding and americans were in harm's way. romney campaign accused them of seem pa thi sympathizing with militants. the president shot back. >> governor romney shoots first and names later. as a president i've learned you can do that. >> reporter: the protest may continue but in benghazi, decent people took to the streets to denounce the killing. other people took up the work of the soft spoken ambassador and colleagues who gaveth life for us. >> i look forward to exploring those possibilities as we work together to join a free democratic prosperous libya.

copy cats now there's a danger of them being banned all together. as sharyn alfonsi discovered those tiny magnets can be a pediatricians nightmare. >> reporter: they're called bucky calls. 2 million cubes sold in the u.s. but they can also be extremely dangerous. >> what does this dinosaur say? >> reporter: 1 1/2-year-old presley was hospitalized after he swallowed 18 buckyball beads last month. >> they were on the table when he found them. >> reporter: his mother never saw the warping labels on the package accidently left the toy out where presley could reach them. >> he was here out of my sight for less than five minutes. >> reporter: at the time he had no way of knowing if he swallowed the magnets but laura took him to the pediatricians office the next day. this x-ray shows 18 buckyballs

lodged in his stomach. i knew if they had passed from his tstomach into his intestine he could die. they could stick together and puncture holes in his thin intestinal lining. the consumer product safety commission said presley is just one of estimated 1700 people who have been hospitalized in the past three years after ingesting these kinds of magnets. as a result, they are demanding lucky balls and similar brands of magnet toys be pulled off the market immediately. but ceo craig zuker isn't willing to back down. >> this is the first time in 11 years the company said to the commission we don't agree a recall is necessary. zuker said buckyballs are not

defective and don't require a ban. he said they're an office toy. clearly not intended or marked for children. >> they're hot in happy meals? we're in adult stores. >> reporter: he thinks the u.s. government has gone too far with their ban. zuker wants the provocative campaign called save our balls to rally support for his company. >> they want to give this company the death penalty. >> rachel: >> reporter: the buckyballs cause inadvertently sparked a debate on the role of big government. zuker says his company has tried to reach a compromise with the government, manly he's taken steps to educate consumers about magnet safety and educated packaging with clear warnings from parents. . it's impossible to miss the warnings. they are all over the place. >> reporter: but the consumer product safety commission told

us these labels don't go far enough. >> it's not work. the packaging education campaign is not stopping children from facing serious injury. >> reporter: presley was rushed to the hospital where doctors were able to move the 18 buckyballs without major surgery. 2-year-old bralin has not been as lucky. back in april, he swallowed eight magnetic beads from a toy, 1 of 11 companies that volunteered to stop selling its problem. his parents first saw something was wrong when he started flowing up. his parents bought the neocubes from a local supermarket before he was born. they saw the warnings and made sure to hide the toy well out of reach but the jordans say they weren't careful enough.

>> koppen sense says don't have them around you. a couple rolled out of sight. >> reporter: the magnets stuck together inside of him, twisting and ultimately destroying his intest ins. after eight surgeries and one month in icu he's now tethered to a feeding tube, 18 hours a day, unable to process solid food. the jordans now have 1,5$1,500, in medical bills. they added there's a lot of dangerous products out there especially if you eat them. they plan to regulate the toys in order to make them safer. in the meantime they're trying to get magnetic toys off kids
